What Business Owners Actually Need to Know
Different stages of business require different financial skills. Here's what matters at each phase.
| Business Stage | Core Financial Focus | Common Questions | Skills Developed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starting Out | Understanding basic cash flow and initial budgeting | How do I separate business and personal finances? | Reading bank statements, tracking expenses |
| First Year Trading | Managing invoices and predicting shortfalls | Why does profit not equal cash in the bank? | Forecasting, payment terms, GST basics |
| Growth Phase | Planning investments and managing debt | When should I hire help versus doing it myself? | ROI calculation, financing options, ratio analysis |
| Established Operations | Efficiency and strategic planning | How do I know if we're actually profitable long-term? | Margin analysis, scenario planning, exit strategies |
How Our Program Works
We've designed a learning path that mirrors how business owners actually work. Start with foundations and build towards the specific challenges your business faces.
Assessment and Context Setting
We begin by understanding where your business sits right now. What systems do you already have? What keeps you up at night? This shapes which modules you'll focus on first. Some people need cash flow help immediately, others want to understand pricing better.
Core Financial Literacy
Everyone completes the fundamentals—reading financial statements, understanding margins, and tracking the numbers that actually matter. We use real Australian business examples and current tax year information. Our spring 2025 intake starts September 8th with evening sessions.
Applied Learning with Your Numbers
You bring your actual business data and work through it with guidance. Build forecasts, analyze trends, and test scenarios. This is where things click—you're not working with made-up examples anymore. You're figuring out your own business.
Ongoing Support Network
After completing the program, you join our alumni community. Monthly check-ins, updated resources when tax rules change, and a group of business owners who understand the challenges. Finance isn't something you learn once and forget—it's ongoing.
What You'll Actually Learn to Do
These are the practical skills past participants have told us made the biggest difference to how they run their businesses.
Read Your Numbers with Clarity
Stop feeling lost when looking at your P&L. Understand what each line means, spot trends before they become problems, and explain your financial position to banks or investors with confidence.
Plan Ahead Instead of React
Build realistic forecasts that help you make decisions months in advance. Know when you can afford to hire, when to hold off on purchases, and how to prepare for seasonal dips in revenue.
Make Pricing Decisions That Work
Calculate your actual costs properly, understand your margins, and set prices that cover everything while staying competitive. Stop undercharging because you're not sure of the real numbers.
Before You Start
Do I need prior finance knowledge or an accounting background?
How much time should I expect to commit each week?
Can I join mid-year or do I need to wait for the next intake?
During the Program
What if I miss a session because of business commitments?
Will I get individual feedback on my business finances?
Are the sessions in-person or can I join online from anywhere in Australia?
After You Finish
Do I get continued access to materials and updates?
Can I come back for refresher sessions as my business grows?
I was three years into running my business and still felt like I was guessing. The program helped me understand where money was actually going and why we'd have good months followed by stress. Now I can see problems coming and do something about them before they hit.
